Records, 1846-1848, consisting of Colonel Stevenson's letter book and two orderly books. The letter book contains copies of official letters to and from Stevenson, dealing with such matters as the transportation of the regiment to California by ship, a short stay in Rio de Janeiro, problems with Mission property, rumors of hostile actions and impending outbreaks, problems of administering the district under his command (Southern Militiary District, California Territory, with headquarters at Los Angeles), army administrative matters, miltary discipline, relations with the Indians, etc. Much of his correspondence was with Secretary of War William L. Marcy, General Stephen Watts Kearny, Colonel Richard Barnes Mason, Colonel Henry Stanton, Silas Wright, Lieutenant William Tecumseh Sherman, and General Robert E. Temple. One of the orderly books contains general orders of Colonel Richard Barnes Mason, governor of California Territory, issued from headquarters, 10th Military District, Monterey, usually through 1st Lieutenant William Tecumseh Sherman. It includes many reports of courts martial. The other is a regimental orderly book, containing Colonel Stevenson's orders issued at Fort Columbus, New York, on board the transport Thomas H. Perkins, and at San Francisco, Monterey, and Los Angeles. A few miscellaneous special orders on loose sheets of paper are laid into this volume. Accompanied by a typewritten transcript of selected letters.
